DSC00808A fire  broke out in a gas refilling depot in kiunyu village Giakanja in tetu district.

7 people had been taken to Nyeri provincial general hospital in serious conditions after they were involved in  the fire tragedy.
4 of the victims were immediately admitted in the Intensive Care Unit(I.C.U) in the Nyeri Provincial General Hospital while the other three are still admitted in the same hospital with serious burns.

2 of the casualties later succumbed as preparation to air lift them to Nairobi for more attention were underway.

The fire started in a gas refilling depot where a tanker deporting gas is said to have hit an electric post leading to the explosion. This LPG depot is said to be distributing gas to retailers around nanyuki, isiolo, meru and within Nyeri.

The PPO central John Mbijiwe warned the residents from going near the area terming it a danger zone. They were asked to keep off from the area completely.

Mbijiwe said that there were more underground tanks which had not exploded saying that these tanks can explode any time and the explosion can reach a big area as these tanks are full of gas.
The owner of the depot had not been contacted yet as his cell phone had been switched off.
Mbijiwe assured that the nearby residents were out of danger as the depot qwas surrounded with a perimeter wall hence keeping the fire from reaching residential homes.

Air force support has been asked to come and try to put off the fire as the fire brigades cant be in a position to handle such kind of a case due to the risk that is there.

Due to safety measures, some villagers decided to park and leave the area for their own safety as no one can really say up to when this fire will be put off.

The PC said that all the residents should keep off from the area so as to reduce risk of having more victims as a cause of the disaster.

Two of the surviving causalities with more than 9o% burns have been flown to nairobi for more treatment as Nyeri P.G.H is not in a position to handle such kind of burns.

Area MP Esther Murugi has said that speculations are that more people are suspected to have been trapped in there adding that confirmation about the same are yet to be made after the Kenya Army has put off the fire.
