The usual trend is with us again, teachers in public schools in the country have vowed to go on strike after talks with their representatives and the government failed to materialize. The row comes in the wake of the opening of schools for the third term this year which also happens to be the final examinations term. The grave matter has been precipitated by a move by parliament to divert funds set aside to employ 28000 teachers to award the military a pay hike.
The move was endorsed by Parliament last Tuesday when MPs passed the Appropriations Bill without scrutinising the details, sparking the strike by teachers that starts on Tuesday morning.
The boycott could paralyse learning in public schools and interfere with preparations for national examinations by Standard Eight and Form Four candidates. It has been a tradition by teachers in Kenya to go on strike on third term an action that badly affects the smooth flow of the final examinations which take place during this term.
