Nyeri slums installed with streetlights |
The face of Nyeri town is changing dramatically with the installation of streetlights across various slums. The 38 million shillings project is targeting six slums area among them Majengo, Ruring'u, Kamukunji and Dedan Kimathi grounds. Mayor of Nyeri Joseph Thairu expects the lighting to not only improve security but also extend the business hours in the rural town.
According to the Mayor the street lighting project is bound to be a show-stopper. We are also going to upgrade our markets through the slum-upgarding program. We are also constructing three markets. The first market is the Sokojinga market which will now be housed in a two-story building. Presently, it is an open market and is in a very bad state.
The second market is the Mtumba hawkers market. This is another big project which we will be embarking on. All hawkers selling second-hand clothes will be moved into a two-storey building which will become the new home of the Mtumba market. Finally, the market that overlooks the Dedan Kimathi grounds is in a very bad state and whenever there are functions on the grounds; the market make everything look very unappealing. All this will change once the market is completed. My desire is to change the lives of the people of Nyeri and to this end we have set aside 43.9 million for capitals projects in all the wards. We have a local authorities deliverance plan but no since we cannot cover all the projects that need to be done in the municipality, other projects will be done in subsequent years –so that even projects that have not been highlighted will also be done.

Great face for Nyeri. For so long it had been in darkness. Now there is improvement
