The Journey to Women representation in leadership positions across the Political divide, has undoubtedly been a hard struggle marked with sheer determination and sacrifice from both men and women who believed and still believe in the relevance of the Woman as a key stakeholder in socio- political and economic fortunes of our country Kenya and the world at large.
We must appreciate that the status of Women has been subject to a myriad of obstacles ranging from cultural beliefs, poverty, lack of representation among others challenges that have for decades negatively affected women growth and development
The promulgation of the 2010 constitution marked the beginning of a new chapter for women, especially in the political realm, the Constitution providing for political space for women to be nominated in political parties and elected as county representatives, even giving women the audacity to hope that the Deputy President would be a woman.the courts may have Un- necessarily halted that realization by calling for “progressive realization of the same” but the DREAM IS STILL VALID-that is a fight for another day.
In the recent past the Country has engaged constructively-or not, on the souring wage bill that is apparently slowing down the countries development agenda-we must continue to engage and find solution for the same-Agreed!
However,to suddenly think and encourage the thought that women County Representation and Nominated Members of Parliament are to blame for the rising wage bill-and as such they should be the first casualties in solving the issue by leaving Parliament,is a thought dangerously bordering on the wrong side of History.it is an absent thought-that has not been in the country to witness women emancipation struggles to the current point and Status.
Affirmative Action is not a privilege!
Affirmative Action is a necessary tool-now more than ever-in making sure that the woman’s voice is heard and seen in Parliament and other leadership positions.
Today,in a village cattle dip meeting,Women are represented-not only as members, but as Vice Chairs and Chair lady’s, why? because there is a set Example of such possibilities, because Priscilla Nyokabi is in Parliament and she speaks well, why not have a woman in the committee, Because Mary Wambui Has represented Othaya, why not have a Woman represent us in the Coffee meeting?such is the Domino effect of having women in representative positions, Forty seven women giving a chance of the re-thinking and re-writing of cultural beliefs that have negatively riddled women,Nominated Women proving possible-the impossible- isnt Naisula Lesuuda in Parliament representing Samburu Women?
We remind our National Leaders,Starting from the President,Members of Parliament, to Our County Leaders that the Loudest Voice-the energetic beast of burden -that oils the turbines of our country’s growth is the woman;flower girl or not-Her Representation is Important-Necessary and Fundamental-Any Idea to the contrary-is Null and Void.
