Nyeri county chiefs and their assistants have benefited from training on how to use social media to boost security and communication in their areas of their jurisdiction.
Lanet-Ummoja location Senior Chief Francis Kariuki from Nakuru County, who was invited by Nyeri county government from the beginning of this week, has so far trained more than 3,000 people from the county on how to embrace the new technology.
Kariuki, who in the recent past has earned national and international recognition for the use of twitter in boosting security in his location, said the use of the new technology is cost effective in improving security and communication since many people have mobile phones and the method can use as little as Shs. 1 per message that can be sent to multiple recipients.
The chief noted that the technology will help the administrators in mobilizing people for barazas and giving out public announcements without difficulties of making notices in public venues.
Kariuki said since the time he started using twitter in his location, he currently has more than 29,000 twitter followers saying the technology has helped him to reduce crime rate in the area by a big percentage.
He observed that some of the chiefs who have already undergone the training are now using twitter to connect with other people adding that he was overwhelmed by the positive response of Nyeri residents on the technology.
The 48-year-old chief, who is proud of traveling to different parts of the world due to his use of the technology, stressed that the method of communication is not meant only for new generation but also can be used by aged people since it is easily understandable.
He said the method needs one to send a message from any kind of phone which connects to twitter service.
One of those who benefited from the training Kihatha assistant chief, Theresa Nyawira appreciated the technology saying that she will encourage her local residents to start twitting her on any occurrence of crime in her sub-location.
She said with the use of the technology, she will be able to improve communication and security in the sub-location.
