Feb 18, 2014 Waruguru kiai DIARY OF A NYERI WOMAN, Features 2
There is a woman,
Who told her husband;
“My love, go and fight for kenya,
Go and fight for kenya’s children
Go and get back kenya’s land,
Go and wipe away kenya’s teas tears,
And encourage kenya to be strong,
Go and tell her children,
They will be okay”.
This woman I know of,
Told her husband;
“My love, I will be okay,
I will defend our children,
And tell them about you,
How great you are,
I will stay back,
And remind them of your name,
And I will wait for you,
But now,
Go to her,
She needs you more than I do”.
This woman I write of,
Stood amidst adversity,
At a time, when it was a curse to be a woman,
And when they asked her of her love,
She said;
“My love is gone,
He is out there,
Fighting for his other love,
Fighting for her lands,
Fighting for her freedom,
Fighting for her dignity”,
And they would laugh and ask her;
“And what of you?
Who is fighting for your children?
Who is fighting for your soil?
Who keeps you warm at night?”
And she would tell them;
“When he fights for her lands, he fights for mine too.
When he fights for her children’s future, he fights for mine too
Her soil is my soil too,
Her dignity, mine.
When he keeps her warm at night, I am warm too”.
This woman I write of,
Is no woman,
How can she be a woman?
What woman allows her husband to go fight for onother?
To share with another,
Her love and life?
Show me one,
And I will tell you she is no woman,
Just like this woman I write of,
Today,more than fifty years later,
when you ask of her love,
And what happened,
She says;
“My love went,
And fought for her,
She is now free,
Her beauty splendid,
Her lands flourish,
And her children bless the soul with laughter,
Her children dream impossible dreams
To them there is no impossibility,
She has her name back,
They call her freedom,
My husband won,
For her and me”.
But where is your husband,
We always ask her,
“My husband came back home,
He is here,
If you listen closely to the sway of the mugumo,
You will hear him,
He goes to school with his children in kimathi,
Lives in kimathi, and walks in the streets of kimathi,
And when you tell her that what she says is history she says;
“Show me freedom, without scars of history
His history,
Show me soil, that has not drank kimathi’s blood
Show me,
Show me dignity, unwashed with kimathi’s shame and humiliation,
His tears,
Prove to me, that today is not bright,
Because kimathi and many other freedom fighters lit the dark paths”
This woman I speak of,
This woman,
Mukami wa kimathi.
She is no woman,
She is no woman!
She is a brave warrior,
She is a freedom fighter,
She is a gatekeeper of our independence,
She is a reminder of our long history,
She is an example of self sacrifice, humility and love
She is the face of freedom,
A hero,
Mukami wa kimathi.

My Grand Mother talks of books she has never read,she cannot pronounce the word ‘empowerment’ but she understands my cause. My young sister applauds my cause;I speak her mind,My Neighbor tells me never to stop writing his story,and the stranger at the bus-stop smiles at me,he knows me, I speak about him every day. Am a young Woman who gets to the tell the world;You are out of order,You too are out of Order,This Whole World is out of Order! using words,My words and In My own way which in most cases is always Our Way.
