” When invited for a party do not go and seat on those seats preserved for the guest of hon our, because the owner of the party may come and ask you to take those that are at the back to give space for the guest of hon our “…..the parable goes as narrated by Jesus. What really come to my mind after reading these piece of scripture is the theme of humility.
Humility- is the quality of being modest or respectful according to the definition of the dictionary. It is a virtue that more so relates to egolessness, that is, separating yourself from your ego, that self-pride.From the religious point of view humility in its own simplicity, is viewed as or consists of keeping oneself within one’s own bound. This means that you don’t push your far beyond yourself. To others, they will say it is the aspect of being down to earth. Not trending with pride rounded on your neck or with your shoulders too high.
You will agree with me when i say that being humble amounts to one submitting themselves to others or a legitimate authority. It involves several attitudes and behavior,
1. one has to acknowledge the virtues and talents of others and more to that he must honor and respect those that surpasses those of the individual.
2. one must also recognize the limits of themselves be it the talents, their abilities or even authority and not go beyond that that is beyond their reach.
3. one must also come to terms with submission.
Focusing on the three point above one could be tempted to think that humility in a hidden interpretation could be a sign of weakness, lack of self-value which is aimed at lowering ones self-efficacy i.e the strong inner believe that you can do things, complete tasks and achieve goals. To entertain these kind of thought is not only absurd but also not rewarding to the person.
Where i come from, my culture stipulates or requires one to humble themselves. More so when interacting with the old.A young man cannot talk or interrupt an elder man when he is airing his ideas. Humility is paramount to success.I have always wanted to ‘lift the veil’ behind the most successful people in the corporate business and in other areas such as in religion.I have read many of their biographies talk of Benjamin Franklin,Stephen Covey,Martin Luther junior just to mention but a few, despite of them being famous for what the did and do best, one common denominator is that they are characterized with being humble and eventually rising to their ‘hall of fame’.
Many say that one cannot succeed without sufferings and that if you succeed without sufferings, then somebody suffered for you. If you suffer and don’t succeed, then somebody may succeed after you.
Lastly i like the prayer by Margot Be nary-Isbert……”Lord, thou know est better than myself that I am growing older and will soon be old. Keep me from becoming too talkative, and especially from the unfortunate habit of thinking that I must say something on every subject and at every opportunity.
Release me from the idea that I must straighten out other peoples’ affairs. With my immense treasure of experience and wisdom, it seems a pity not to let everybody partake of it. But thou know est, Lord, that in the end I will need a few friends.
Keep me from the recital of endless details; give me wings to get to the point.
Grant me the patience to listen to the complaints of others; help me to endure them with charity. But seal my lips on my own aches and pains — they increase with the increasing years and my inclination to recount them is also increasing.
I will not ask thee for improved memory, only for a little more humility and less self-assurance when my own memory doesn’t agree with that of others. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be wrong.
Keep me reasonably gentle. I do not have the ambition to become a saint — it is so hard to live with some of them — but a harsh old person is one of the devil’s masterpieces.
Make me sympathetic without being sentimental, helpful but not bossy. Let me discover merits where I had not expected them, and talents in people whom I had not thought to possess any. And, Lord, give me the grace to tell them so.
Amen” and this is what i would also have to say also…. that Life is a long lesson in humility.”
