‘ Cleanliness is half your health,’ said a Czech intellectual. Infant, the brainy proverb has been the foundation upon which promotion of high standard of hygiene, campaigns against life threatening ailments and a proper continuous sanitation by medical practitioners have perpetually sprout. With such a gold plated fact and in the quest to see a free zero rate littered environment, it knocked hard on the sense of the28 year old Charles Ngatia on the affluent treasure that lies beneath the swaddled heap of solid waste within Nyeri subcounty.
Having pursued a diploma course in business management, Ngatia choose to walk a different path unlike many whose passion would later see him delve into the business of managing solid waste material and cleaning services delivery.
Being highly placed as the operations manager and one of the founders of the ‘Send us Nyeri cleaning Services’ (SUNCS),Ngatia spells out their two distinctive cleaning services delivery as garbage collection disposal and commercial offices cleaning services which has so far absorbed a twenty three volunteer staff membership since it’s formation in 2012.Though operating on a shoe string budget, the SUNCS organization has continually engaged young people by soliciting their energy and channeling it into a constructive exercise.
Once in every month, SUNCS members brainstorm and unanimously come up with public littered site after which they seek authority from the county administrator and thereafter carry on with the clearance exercise. Frequently, they collaborate with the Nyeri sub county garbage collection team to clear the unwanted refuse. ‘We gain pleasure and satisfaction from this job’, says the environment enthusiast. He goes on to dig deep of the group’s precious memories where he vividly remembers of how the team was actively involved in clearing a superfluous heap of garbage on a piece of land in Nyeri town that stretched from edge to edge. Little did they know that after some time a modern building were to be erected! Moreover the organization pride itself for having been consolidated in the ‘Nyeri greening initiative’, a brainchild project of the Nyeri county government that saw the inclusion of both the public and private organizations within Nyeri county clean Nyeri town.
Upon disposing the solid waste , loaded with no vision of creating the loathsome Dandora dumpsite knockoff within Nyeri, Ngatia tells me his team is currently undertaking training sessions on waste management Under the auspices of the ministry of agriculture. Through the training, the team is gaining knowledge impartation on how to recycle some non-biodegradable refuse, safety measures on incinerating refuse and preserving the biodegradable which is eventually converted into compost manure which can be packaged and sold.
She might be gone but her relentless spirit and incessant effort to campaign against environment destruction places her best to inspire Ngatia. The ever hailed former environmentalist and highly respected Nobel laureate Wangari maathai‘s qualities moltivates Ngatia to walk in the same path to see wangari‘s visionary plan fulfilled.
By extension, his organization has in the meantime captured motivational talk sessions in their timetable of events all dedicated to the young people within the Nyeri county. Further on, they operate a 25 membership table banking project all drawn from the small scale organization in bid to increase the operational fund, save the income as well as borrow loans to improve their members’ lifestyle. This hence is a clear indication that the organization might be crawling in the meantime but exponentially rising all attributed to its scintillating roles. In future, he aspires to enlarge his organization by employing over 100 young people, get involved in clearing trash from the estates and many parts within the Nyeri County. He is also optimistic of benefiting from the uwezo fund; a special kitty allocated to upcoming entrepreneurs. He also wishes to get involved in the application of the government tenders for his organization to be served with the responsibility of cleaning public offices.
Besides running out of the necessary cleaning resources that has so far posed as a major challenge for SUNCS, Ngatia is a young exemplary model who is not only visionary but determined and dispelling a long held misconception that, garbage collection is a reserve of the antiquated, rustic fellas languishing in some forgotten corners of the country!
