Deejay Vaashiz She spins it! She scratches it! And she bins it! Yes, she! At a moment when Central Kenya women‘s aggressiveness is highly being misconstrued for arrogance, toughness and award winning techniques for husband battering, Grace Michuki is playing it hard on the double decked spinning modern deejay model as she displays her prowess on the deejay field.
The tender aged 23 year old Grace Michuki is one of the chosen few refined deejay women in the country. Well as for the Nyeri county, where there is a leveled playing field bursting forth into equitable opportunities, Grace who doubles up as an Entrepreneur, a high ranked Scout Leader and above all a Deejay enjoys the privilege of holding her esteemed talent to her heart, utilizing the skill and running with it all the way to an achievement and the amazement of the young ‘digital’ and old fashioned ‘analogue’ generation as she does her thing of blending different genre of music leaving everyone satisfied and thoroughly entertained.
Grace Michuki starts by narrating to me about her love for music, a trait ingrained within her that gradually attracted her to taking up deejay, a skill she treats as a well-paying job! Operating as ‘Deejay Vaashiz’, a brand name that has shot her to the position of gaining confidence from her clients, with the most recent juicy contract, from different companies doing road shows from within and out of Nyeri County, the political class, and different merry making related events. Rounded up in a group of eight gents, Grace stands out as the only lady in their quick spawning brand operating group ‘The Young Clique Entrepreneurs’ a group she attributes her success and training skills as a deejay.
Drawing her greatest inspiration from music, Grace is also quick to owe her greatest respect to her mother who has continually supported her all along the way. As usual, my inquisitive nature can never allow me to have her expose her challenges! She is quick to pin point that being a female deejay in Nyeri and around the country is a rare commodity therefore translating into a hot cake for many who would wish her to cover their events, a consideration that prompts her to shoot her pricing because of the ever increasing demand. However, she only can show up to a limited number of events taking into consideration that she is the only lady deejay in the county.
All in all, she tells me that plans are underway to recruit more ladies to take up deejaying as a career. In every society, there is a class of the ever jealous and intimidating fellows who can not help sanction their bad wish and puts on a smiley face upon one’s downfall, that also is a category Grace is grappling with in course of her work. Asked whether there is an operational deejay training institution in Nyeri, Grace paints it in black and white that their competent group trains those interested right in their studios in Ruring’u.
Conclusively, she advises young people to translate their hobbies into career as the biblical saying goes ‘where your heart is, so is your wealth’!
