Feb 11, 2014 Waruguru kiai DIARY OF A NYERI WOMAN 0
When a child loses a Pen, it means,
fifty shillings to buy the pen,
fifty Shillings is a meal,
Flour, Sukumawiki,
so what will it be,
The pen, or a meal?.
It means,
Fifty Shillings, absent Money,
which means,
the child must find the pen,
In heaps of garbage,
In a strange woman’s purse,
In a strange man’s bed,
at river banks, brewing,
to get Fifty Shillings.
Then, the burden of life will exhaust the child,
‘glue, ma tap tap’, will ease the burden,
He will forget, about his life,
His lost pen,
maybe, He will remember tomorrow,
and when He does,
He will buy his pen and run back to school,
we must hope.
It means,
Mother will have to creep at night, or day
for fifty shillings,
the pain will be much,
She will drink to be numb,
She will forget, all the smelly forms that sweat on her, and
the Fifty Shillings for the pen,
She will remember tomorrow,
but forget again,
when will she remember?
It means,
asking father,
He has no fifty shillings,
“you bastard, ask your mother”

My Grand Mother talks of books she has never read, she cannot pronounce the word ‘empowerment’ but she understands my cause. My young sister applauds my cause;I speak her mind,My Neighbor tells me never to stop writing his story, and the stranger at the bus-stop smiles at me,he knows me, I speak about him every day. Am a young Woman who gets to the tell the world; You are out of order,You too are out of Order,This Whole World is out of Order! using words,My words and In My own way which in most cases is always Our Way.
