There is some opposition to the new constitution, e.g. from churches (who fear it opens up the issue of abortion, despite the constitution not changing the current legality of abortion only for maternal health). However, according to polls, 64% of voters are in favour of the constitution.

The referendum question was announced on May 13, 2010:

Do you approve the proposed new Constitution?
Swahili: Je, unaikubali katiba mpya inayopendekezwa?

The symbols for the “yes” and “no” sides will be announced shortly; for the constitution to be passed, it needs 50% of the vote and at least 25% of the vote in at least five of the eight provinces
